Soccer, Rugby and American Football all came from the same place. Football was being played with all sorts of different rules in England so they got together and formed a standard set of rules - that's what Football (or Soccer) is today. The next day, the Rugby Football League was formed by those that didn't like the 'no hands' rules. American Football evolved from Rugby and should really be called American Rugby Football. They called it football and later renamed soccer to avoid confusion.
